Card of the Day
Goblin King Goblin King
Dark, Level 1, [Fiend/Effect]
ATK: 0, DEF: 0
AST-031, Common

"This card cannot be attacked if there is another Fiend-Type monster on your side of the field. The ATK and DEF of this card become the number of Fiend-Type monsters on the field (excluding this card) x 1000 points."

Now that I've been playing in sanctioned tournaments for a few weeks now, I've had to adjust to the much more aggressive metagame and I've found myself somewhat outranked. My Fiend beatdown deck has been through 3 different revisions now, the last of which was good enough to get me into the top 8, where I was defeated by an Exodia deck of all things, and left to go home without any prizes once again.

The latest revision of my deck, which I may review shortly depending on how it performs at the next tournament, includes within the main deck and sidedeck various cards for countering stall, which is very heavy in our meta here, be it for Exodia, Burn, Last Turn, or just for no particular reason at all -- everyone is running at least one Level Limit - Area B. One such card I found out of sheer luck in the dollar box at the card shop was this, Goblin King.

Goblin King, like Solar Flare Dragon, is capable of setting up a lock if two of it exist on the field at the same time. I don't have two of them yet, but I might consider trying to find another just to see if this can work to my advantage. What's better, however, is that he is a Level 1 monster who can easily reach +2000 ATK under stall game conditions. When I lost my final duel against the Exodia deck, I had Dark Ruler Ha Des, Giant Orc, Opticlops, and Great Maju Garzett with 4200 ATK on the field just waiting for my Harpie's Feather Duster or MST to clear the way for them to devastate my opponent. The cards were on the bottom of my deck, however, and thus they never showed up. If I had possessed this card in hand then, I would have been able to break through my opponent's Level Limit - Area B and take a place in the top 4. Such is the difference between victory and defeat.

Goblin King seems like the perfect answer to defeating stall for a Fiend beatdown deck. He gets protection from other Fiends, and his ATK can skyrocket to God Card level under stall conditions easily. He's resurrectable, so if a card effect destroys only him, he can come back immediately with the same ATK. I'll give him a tenative rating of Very Good, which will be just almost in the Great catagory. Not having play tested him much, I'm not sure how reliable he'll be, but I believe he can help decks of my type enormously.
